Tip 1:
Know the weight and dimensions. Estimates are ok, but not optimal. The more you can tell your carrier; the more accurate your price quote will be.
Tip 2:
Be sure the consignee can unload. Do they have a loading dock? Proper lifting equipment? Need an appointment delivery? Is an inside delivery needed?
Tip 3:
Understand the paperwork. Proper completion of the Bill of Lading can prevent confusion and unforeseen costs. Work with your forwarder to be sure you’re completing the BOL properly.
Tip 4:
Do you know the ready date and time? This helps your forwarder find a better solution to your specific shipment and secure space on the truck, plane or steamship.
Tip 5:
Do you need coverage? Consult with your forwarder to determine whether standard liability is acceptable or if Declared Value coverage or all-risk coverage is desirable.
Tip 6:
Secure the cargo. Is it properly boxed or crated to arrive safely at the destination?
